“Sport for development is the use of sports for other outcomes related to education, learning, health, peace and financial empowerment,” said Jeff DeCelles, technical director of curriculum and training of the nonprofit Grassroots Soccer.
The power of sport in the lives of young people has great potential. There needs to be an investment in expanding the breadth of sport for development programs to tackle social issues across the world.
Sport can encourage gender equality through youth engagement and can serve as a medium through which gender equity curriculum can be taught.
Sport for Development can be used to tackle a broad range of challenges from sexual health and gender equity in Tanzania to work readiness and employability in Kenya, social inclusivity with focuses on differently-abled folks and refugee communities, safe spaces for vulnerable children, and disaster relief.
